How It Works
A ground plane (or jungle) antenna is a quarter-wave vertical with its counterpoise built in: a vertical radiator and three radials angled down from a central hub, fed through a BNC connector so your coax hangs straight down. Three built-in struts slide down to hold the radials apart, so there's no separate frame or spreader to buy, pack, or lose. The vertical element folds down for transport, and an isolation ring at the top, labeled with the tuned band, makes it easy to hang and identify.
To deploy: unfold the vertical element, slide the struts down, connect your coax, and hang it.
Field Reports
One customer made 5/9 SOTA contacts about 146 miles on 2m with just 10 watts. Another reached over 60 miles with a 7-watt handheld. Read more reviews.
Built to Last
- 6th generation of my Jungle Hub design
- I personally cut, solder, crimp, assemble, and test every antenna
- The hub is UV and impact resistant, and fully potted to seal out weather
- 14-gauge stranded copper wire with a polyethylene jacket that stands up to repeated folding without kinking
- Semi-rigid struts that spring back if bent, and stay flexible below -20°F
- Aluminum cable sleeves, so no rust
- Suitable for outdoor installation (for long-term use, seal the coax connection with Coax-Seal and secure the antenna so it can't twist in the wind)
Perfect For
POTA, SOTA, EmComm, search and rescue, special events, go bags, hiking, backpacking, hunting camps, apartments, HOA homes, and hotel rooms.
FAQ
Will the struts get brittle in the cold? No. I've tested them below -20°F (-29°C) with no loss of flexibility.
What does 100W+ mean? I use real antenna wire and connectors made for amateur radio. My own gear only goes to 50W, so that's the most I've tested, but I've seen nothing to suggest they can't handle much more.
